INTRODUCTION

 

Nursing is an autonomous profession which utilizes the Art and Science as the bases for its operational code of practice in providing utmost, individualized and holistic care to patients / clients, family, group / community irrespective of the social background, religious affiliate, financial status, and age or gender in restoring health, preventing illness or diseases and promoting good health.

The "Art" in Nursing dictates that a nurse should effectively and efficiently use his/her emotional intelligence, self-discipline / moral concept, physical attributes and social skills in providing quality health care services. While;

"Science" is the base from which all the theoretical frame works models / scientific tools and knowledge guiding the nursing practice are founded.

 

 

WHAT IS NURSING

 

According to WHO (World Health Organization), Nursing encompasses Autonomous and Collaborative care of individuals of all ages, families, groups and communities, sick or well, and in all settings; nursing includes the promotion of health, prevention of illness, and the care of ill, disabled and dying people.

Advocacy, promotion of a safe environment, research, participation in shaping health policy and in patient and health systems management, and education are also key nursing roles. (International Council of Nurses)

 

 

NURSING SERVICES DEPARTMENT IN FEDERAL NEUROPSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL, YABA LAGOS

The Nursing Services Department is a vibrant and active department in Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Yaba. It is the fulcrum upon which other services in the hospital in relation to patient’s / client’s care runs.

It provides 24/7 services for patients or individuals with minor or major health challenges as regards mental health services.

The Department is presently headed by a Deputy Director Nursing services (DDNs ODUFUWA O. O {Mrs} - HOD) with other Deputy Directors assisting in the managerial operation of the department. There are also Assistant Directors who contributes immensely to ensure effective administrative harmonization. Statistically, there are total number of 313 nurses (nurse administrators inclusive) and 112 hospital attendants.
