Drug Unit
The Drug Unit of Federal Neuro-psychiatric Hospital Yaba, Lagos is one of the SUB-SPECIALIST Units in the Hospital. It provides both In-Patient and Out-Patient treatment for Patients with substance-related and substance-induced disorders. It has two male Wards and a female Ward with total capacity for 84 Patients (bed capacity: 60 males and 24 females).
The Wards include Adeoye Lambo, Tolani Asuni and Adejoke Orekoya Wards.
In the complex is also an Occupational Therapy Unit, Consulting room for Patient assessment and unit meetings, offices for the Nursing officers as well as Ward Attendants.
The unit works at the Out-Patient Clinic every Tuesday. However, it attends to Patients other than those with substance use disorders.
Function and Roles
The core function and roles of the Drug Unit can be divided into three main areas.

CLINICAL FUNCTIONS
The Drug Unit is a multidisciplinary section of the Hospital. The Unit functions with a medical team which comprises of Medical Doctors, Nurses, Clinical Psychologists, Psychiatric Social Workers and Occupational Therapists. Other members of the team include the Health Promotion Unit/Physiotherapists, the Ward Attendants, Occupational Therapy Artisans, and Security men among others.
TRAINING
The Consultant Psychiatrists in the Drug Unit are responsible for training Resident Doctors and medical students posted to the Drug Unit. However, the Unit also receives and trains Nursing Students, Intern Psychologists, Occupational Therapists and Intern Pharmacists. Consultants also participate directly and indirectly in the training of these groups.
Training is conducted during Ward rounds, lecture series, Out-Patient Clinic and seminars organized by the Unit.
RESEARCH
The Unit has a great potential for research especially community-based research. However, resources must be provided in this regard.
THE DRUG AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE UNIT SERVICES:
- Assessment and diagnosis,
- Prevention and Control of drug and Substance abuse,
- Assessment and treatment of individuals with drug and substance abuse related mental illness,
- Treatment of withdrawal symptoms, overdose and on-going cravings,
- Rehabilitation of patients with drug and substance abuse related mental illness
- Re-integration into the society,
- Reduction of availability and accessibility to prescription medications,
- Prevention of relapse,
- Health education and prevention of substance use in schools and workplace.
- Educational research and planning
Core Treatment
Core treatment with all Patients
Mondays: Therapeutic Community Meetings (TCM), to modify and facilitate adaptive positive behaviour in patient, help Patient with time management, teach problem solving skills and also facilitate social interaction amongst Patients. It also helps in building confident and self-esteem in them.
Tuesday: Vocational training in the areas of, Art and craft, Photography, Tailoring, Embroidery, Computer session.
Wednesday: Newspaper review and group discussion. Reading group session. To improve concentration level, to determine level of Patients cognitive functioning, to create awareness of current situation in the society and to improve their reading and listening skills.
Thursday: Socials (musical, intellectual and social games etc.) to facilitate social interaction and social skill).
Friday: Audio-visual therapy and role play, (video clips of individual who had undergone substance use rehabilitation programs) it basically serves as a way to facilitate motivation and social modeling.
