The Child and Adolescent Mental Health Centre is a segment of the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital,Yaba, Lagos which caters through multidisciplinary approach for the mental health needs of children under the age of 18 years living with mental illness and those of them who suffer disability from it.

The unit is headed by ADNS Akingbohungbe.

 

 

CLINIC ACTIVITIES

  • Monday, Wednesday and Friday: Assessment of new cases by nurses, refer patients for further assessment by the psychiatrist, guide patients through the process of registration and other activities. Also, the nurse ensures clients' needs are met and protect clients' right. In addition, the nurse counsel the patients and their family members. Participation in consultant ward round and case presentation with team members on Monday is of utmost importance.

 

  • Tuesday and Thursday: General out patient clinic, new cases and emergencies are seen. Nurses perform clinical assessment, vital signs, progress reports of individual patients since last visit, accurately observing and documenting the patient's behavior. Psychoeducation by 8am daily.

 

 

OTHER ACTIVITIES:

  • Implementation of nursing care plan to maintain high standard of nursing.
  • Ensuring availability of me necessary equipments and materials used in the clinic for the patients.
  • Ensuring the cleanliness of the clinic.
  • Liasing with other departments and units for effective care of the patients.

 

Nurses are actively involved in coordination and participation of the following activities:

  • AFPAS- Autism support group
  • WHO Autism Awareness month
  • Children's day celebration
  • Organizing health walk and outreach around the community to sensitize the public about child mental health disorders and accessibility to care.
  • Nurses continuous education and case presentation comes up weekly on Mondays or any other day as time permits, which includes Nursing Students participation whenever the need arises.
  • The unit also provide facilities for those that cannot be managed by family.

Child and adolescent psychiatry or Pediatric Psychiatry is a branch of psychiatry that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental disorders in children, adolescents, and their families.
